Live 4 Evan 5K
Last night Henri and I signed up for this morning’s 5K! The race was the 2nd Annual Live 4 Evan 5K. 4 years ago the son of one of our family friends died as a result of heart complications that he had had since birth. It was amazing to see so many people come out for the race and to support his family. They put on an amazing race and post-race celebration!
This was Henri’s first race since the Turkey Trot last year so I promised to pace him for his goal pace of 7:30/mile. My coach also wanted me to get in 6 miles of work today so before the race I hit up the track for 12 x 200m on/200m off.
The start of the race was right down the road from the track so I jogged over after the 200’s and met up with Henri and the rest of my family.
We did a little warm-up jog together, stretched, and while Henri was doing drills/strides I caught up with an old high school friend! LOVE this girl!We lined up right before the race was set to go off and after a prayer and the National Anthem we were off!
A downhill first mile = we did really bad with pacing. Henri said he was feeling good so we didn’t back off and went through the first mile in 6:30… oopsie! This is the first photo I’ve ever taken during a race – not too bad if you ask me 😉
At mile 1.5 we hit the hills and Henri’s calves started to cramp up a little bit (a combination of the heat and not eating breakfast) so our pace slowed. We kept chugging along but a little after mile 2 he had to pull over to stretch out and he waved me on.
I wanted to see what I could do so I opened it up for the last mile and ended up closing with a 5:42 mile! (<– I didn’t know I could do that right now).
Henri crossed the finish line not long after me in 23:49 for a new post-collegiate PR! I’m so proud of him!
It was soooooo hot out there that we chose to do our cool-down on the shady trail by the finish line.Misting tent, muffins, coconut water and 3 bottles of water to refuel and recharge. That top half of muffin you see right there is PUMPKIN… and so it begins 😉
It was a great race, and it was really fun to do it with Henri. I can’t wait for our next 5K together!
The rest of the day will be spent inside with the air conditioning watching the US Open semi-finals with my feet up in the air. Here’s to a Federer/Djokovic final!
Have a great SATURDAY!
What are you up to today??
When was the last time that you signed up for a race last minute??
