Getting the Heck Outta Boston (for a warm weather race)

A few notes about how crazy this winter has really been…

– 3 more inches of snow last night – not much but we are slowly and surely creeping towards that #1 snowfall record!

– Buzzfeed put together an awesome list of pictures of all the snow in Boston. You have to check it outtttt, the pictures of people’s front doors completely covered by snow blow my mind!

– The snow banks are so high that people are literally jumping out of their windows into the giant snow piles. While it’s obviously not a good idea (at all) it does look kind of fun… like jumping in a pile of leaves only a lot colder. haha

– JetBlue currently has a giveaway that they are calling the “Get the Heck out of Boston” Sweepstakes for a flight to somewhere warm because even they feel bad for the people of Boston… I’m telling ya this winter has been ROUGH!

So even though my mom and I haven’t won JetBlue’s giveaway we’re taking their advice and getting the heck out of Boston and flying to Florida a WEEK FROM TODAY! And not just for a little getaway – on the 28th I’ll be running the BDR Half Marathon in Orlando!

When looking for a replacement race close to home my coach and I agreed that none of them were ideal courses to shoot for a PR (not to mention that the weather is super unpredictable at the moment) so I started searching for a warm weather race to run ASAP! I really wanted to hit up the Phoenix Half Marathon and meet up with all of my awesome, fellow PRO Ambassadors but Florida just made more sense from New England.

I e-mailed the race organizers of the BDR Half and asked if they had any elite bibs still available and got a response within 10 minutes saying yes and they’d love to have me! Minutes later my mom and I were on the phone booking flights and planning our 4 days in Florida. I honestly cannot wait for a little break from this winter weather and a fun girls weekend with my mama. She signed up for the BDR 10K so we’ll both be racing which makes the trip extra special.

Things actually seem to be working out for the better after Hyannis was cancelled, a warm-weather trip, getting to race in Florida, and squeezing in an extra week of high quality training after the past two weeks got a little messed  up by the weather. Tuesday I had 12x 600m on the treadmill at a goal pace of 5:25-5:35 and I negative split them from 5:33-5:24 pace. Tomorrow is a 5 mile tempo and then Tuesday I just have a fartlek and then it’s race time!!!

The last race I ran in Florida – 5K at a track meet in college.
