Avo-Nana Pudding: Feeding Fun with Num Num Inc.

The first time I heard about Baby Led Weaning I was really intrigued by the idea. I mean letting your baby feed themselves frees you up to snack/eat your meal at the same time. Win, win! But when it came down to it Henri was a little nervous about the BLW so we introduced solids to Liv with a good mixture of finger foods and purees. Sometimes we would feed her the purees with a spoon but that took away one of my favorite things about Baby Led Weaning: the autonomy it gives your baby to feed themselves. So we gave her most of her purees in pouches and let her hold them and feed herself by squeezing and sucking on the spout of the pouch.

It was nice to allow Lavinia that independence but as she approached her first birthday I thought it would be a good time to introduce utensils. She LOVED getting to hold her utensils but mainly just used them to push her food around the high chair tray or hold it uselessly in one hand while she ate with the other. It was always funny to watch but I was looking for a way to teach her how to eat properly with a spoon or fork when I stumbled upon NumNum on Instagram. When I saw their Beginner Bowl and Gootensils I just knew we had to try them out!

If you follow my sporadic postings on Instagram Stories you will have seen that our first few attempts with the GOOtensils and Beginner Bowl were a bit messy. She had a grand old time dipping her hands in her bowl of cereal and smearing it in her hair. After we demonstrated how she was supposed to use the GOOtensils a couple of times, and ate a few meals with me dipping the GOOtensil in her food and handing it to her to eat herself she got the hang of it. Whenever she puts a bite in her mouth she looks so proud (which is probably due in part to her mommy and daddy cheering her on every time, haha).

It’s incredible how easy the GOOtensils are for her to grip and eat off of. With traditional baby spoons there’s a bit more maneuvering that goes on to get the food in her mouth, even if Henri or I are helping her.  All she has to do is dip and eat!

One of Lavinia’s favorite foods to eat with her GOOtensils is Avo-Nana Pudding, a simple blend of avocado and banana whipped together with a pinch of cinnamon. I thought I would share my *recipe* because it’s a go-to in our household for Liv and even passes the “I would eat it myself” test.
