Today I’m so excited to share a bit more about Pregnancy #2 with you! I seriously cannot believe that the first trimester is almost over… they weren’t lying when they said that the second pregnancy flies by much faster than the first. As a general overview of the weeks 4-12 I feel so lucky to have had a relatively easy time in terms of morning sickness and all that comes with that. When I was pregnant with Lavinia I was super duper sick in the first trimester and threw up so much and lost so much weight over the course of a few days that I had to go on anti-nausea medication. This time around I escaped with just some mild nausea and I only threw up once! I’m so thankful for this because when I found out I was pregnant I was really nervous about all of the commitments and plans I had during the coming weeks and how they would be affected if I got sick.
Below are some highlights from weeks 4-12, I didn’t go too in depth but since this covers almost 2 months it got loooong, so grab yourself a cup of coffee, get cozy, and settle in 😉
Week 4
- Baby is the size of a poppy seed!
- I took a test at 4 weeks on the dot and found out we were expecting!
- I immediately texted 4 of my closest mama friends pictures of the test!
- I told Henri that night, he was so excited!
Week 5
- Baby is the size of an apple seed!
- I made the mistake of telling Lavinia that there was a baby in mommy’s belly, thinking she wouldn’t quite understand but later that week when I picked her up at daycare she gave me away to her teacher by pointing at my belly and saying “baby!”
- I called our birth center to set up our first appointment!
- went to Portland for work
- celebrated my second Mother’s Day and my first as a mommy of two!
- I swear a bump has already started showing – my belly starts out relatively flat in the morning but by the evening it seems pretty obvious to me (and henri) that I have a bump… already wondering how long we’ll be able to keep this secret.
- weight gained: 1 pound
- miles run: 45.9 (including 1 workout and a 10 mile long run)
Week 6
- Baby is the size of a sweet pea!
- I swear my bump is already starting to show. Especially later on in the day, I have to flex to hide any evidence of a bump
- This week we shared the news with our families – everyone was super excited!
- I’m still feeling pretty good, but I’m a little nervous about the upcoming week because that’s right around the time I started feeling sick when I was pregnant with Lavinia.
- weight gained: 2 lbs
- miles run: 47.7 – (you can read this week’s training summary here)
Week 7
- Baby is the size of a blueberry!
- I was in Charlotte, NC for most of this week for work (NCAA DII Nationals) and luckily I felt good most of the time. I did have moments where I was feeling kind of nauseated but a few of the kids on the team also weren’t feeling good so I’m not sure if it was “morning sickness” or whatever they had.
- Running in Charlotte was pretty hard because it was wicked hot and humid, I did one of my workouts on the treadmill to avoid the heat and ended up cutting my long run from 12 to 10 because it was just too hot/humid.
- We celebrated Memorial Day with donuts and a beach trip!
- weight gained: 3 lbs
- miles run: 46 miles
Week 8
- Baby is the size of a raspberry!
- Lavinia and I went to my first prenatal appointment. It was so wonderful to catch up with all of the ladies at our birth center again and it was surreal to be back in the room where Liv was born with her as a toddler. I clearly remember our first moments as a family of 3 in that room and now she is almost 2 years old – it’s crazy how fast time flies!
- I ran my last track race of the season this week, the community 3000m at the rabbit5000 event (recap here), I was really happy with a 10:20 at almost 8 weeks pregnant
- Also of note – I ate my first ever double-double from In-N-Out after my race.
- weight gained: 3
- miles run: 39
Week 9
- Baby is the size of a cherry!
- This week I experienced what I would consider my first real “craving” of this pregnancy. I saw a commercial or Instastory or something about rice krispie treats and I absolutely had to make some! Liv was really happy about this craving.
- I didn’t run at all this week because I treated it as my rest week after my last track race.
- weight gained: ?
- miles run: 0 (rest week)
Week 10
- Baby is the size of a strawberry!
- I went to my first Fit4Moms class with one of my mama friends and LOVED it! I signed up for their “teacher special” for the summer and am looking forward to 2 months of mommy/baby friendly workouts
- We celebrated Henri for Father’s Day with a family hike!
- On the last day of week 10 we announced our pregnancy on Instagram!
- Henri and I also left for our 1 week anniversary trip to Amsterdam!!! Luckily, I mostly felt good during our long flight there and when started feeling a little nauseous towards the end of the flight a little peppermint essential oil was all I needed to feel better.
- weight gained: ?
- miles run: 14.5
Week 11
- Baby is the size of a lime!
- Henri and I spent this entire week on vacation in Amsterdam! It was such a special time that we got to share together celebrating our 5 year anniversary and in anticipation of our second little one on the way!
- I planned on running a somewhat consistently this week but we were walking almost 10 miles everyday and that on top of the first trimester exhaustion caught up with me – we went on one 4 mile run together the entire week. #worthit
- We ate a ton of yummy food and just soaked up time together exploring.
- I am so thankful to have felt great for the majority of the trip – there was just one day when I wasn’t feeling good and I think that was just because the museum we were in was hot and it had been a while since I had eaten/drank anything (they didn’t allow bags in the museum). As soon as we went outside into the chilly air and I had a snack/some water I felt way way better.
- weight gained:?
- miles run: 8 / miles walked: 50+ / miles biked: 30
Week 12
- Baby is the size of a PLUM!
- Henri and I came home from Amsterdam and spent the week playing catch up with work and all of our household chores
- I had my second prenatal appointment at my birth center and I got to hear the baby’s heartbeat for the first time! (that sound is truly magical)
- We transitioned Lavinia to her toddler bed over the weekend and so far she is rocking it, she’s got in one nap and one full-night sleep in the toddler bed and she’s fallen asleep in the same amount of time as in her crib AND when she’s woken up she just hangs out in their waiting for one of us to come get her… let’s see how long that trend holds haha
- weight gained: 7 lbs
- miles run: 16.5 / miles walked: 9 / 1 strength workout and 1 Yoga Workout
A Note on Pregnancy Running
Leading into my pregnancy with Lavinia I was so burnt out on running that I was looking for a break and immediately cut my running back when I found out I was pregnant. This time around I’m going into pregnancy in the best shape of my life and have a lot of positive momentum with my running. I’d like to keep that going, and while I obviously am not planning to train at an elite level throughout my pregnancy I would like to keep my running mileage up a little more than I did during my first pregnancy. However, I also really enjoy looking at pregnancy as a time to be a little more relaxed about my running and do like to cease the opportunity to do some other physical activities that I love but don’t always fit in with my training during a specific training block – like hiking with the family, going to fitness classes with friends, playing tennis with Henri, biking, etc. I’m planning on taking things week-by-week and day-by-day but I am planning on tracking my pregnancy miles, mostly just because I think it would be fun to know at the end how much this little one and I ran together.
Pregnancy miles so far: 362.5
